Smallville
The Story of a Girl
Lex knows that the birth of Hannah Kent wasn’t necessarily divine intervention, but judging by the pudgy pink cheeks and the curly golden hair, he can’t be certain of that. She makes him think of platitudes and maxims about angels, and if that’s what she does to him, he can only imagine what she does to her father. The idea alone causes Lex to feel sympathy for Martha Kent, but even more than that he harbors a great respect because Martha's responsible for this little Catherine-the-Great-in-the-making.
Hannah may not say much, but she certainly wields a lot of power.
Lex wouldn’t put money on it, if only because Clark would probably get annoyed, but he’s not sure that he and Clark would be together without Hannah. Something about her just makes other things irrelevant. She’s so small. She has so much potential to do whatever she wants.
She may only be six months old, but already her tiny fist has more power over Lex than most of the Fortune 500 combined. Of course, that may also be because Lex Corp has just broken into the top 100 on said list and could buy out most of the remaining 400. Still, Lex has never felt so protective over anyone. Lucas and Clark may mess up, but for the most part they can take care of themselves.
Hannah’s different; and Lex isn’t just saying that because she’s currently stuffing said powerful fist into her mouth and drooling all over Clark’s favorite flannel shirt. At a later date Lex is going to have to thank her for that, but for right now, he’ll settle for taking a photograph of Hannah and her snoring big brother. For posterity of course. Blackmail material never even crosses his mind, but some day Hannah is going to be looker and she’ll swear she was never ‘cute.’
Lex plans on being around on that day to refute her claims.
*
Hannah’s fifth birthday takes place on the farm, and Lex would swear that the party is more for her parents than for Hannah herself. Hannah’s first few years were tough on her family financially; but now that Clark’s got that scholarship, which has nothing to do with Lex Corp and everything to do with Wayne Industries, things are bit easier.
So while Martha and Jonathan are grilling hamburgers and offering rides on Sprite, the 12 year-old Palomino, Hannah is rolling in the dirt with little Jerome Ross, Pete’s nephew. They’ve already played superheroes and cowboys. Lex isn’t quite sure how the two work together, but he’s not the one wearing the cowboy hat and spurs. At least not in public. But far be if from Lex to protest when the birthday girl insists that the best way to show off her dress is to pull up her skirt and show off her Saturday Underoos.
Clark, for his part, spends most of the party following Hannah around, much like a puppy on a leash, trying to prevent her from tearing down the barn. It’s not just Lex who finds this amusing. When Chloe mentions something about Lex being dumped for the blonde with the pigtails, Lex has to concede his loss. If he’s going to lose his boyfriend to a blonde who likes to play in the mud and flash people, at least she’s got style and independence.
*
For Hannah’s tenth birthday, her parents allow her to spend the weekend in Metropolis with Clark and Uncle Lex. Lex isn’t terribly sure who’s more excited about this arrangement, Clark, who tells the Justice League he’ll quit if he can’t have the weekend off; or Lex, who arranges the closing of the Natural History museum so Hannah can look at the dinosaurs in peace.
The private showing of The Nutcracker, because Hannah keeps talking about being a ballerina, is the real surprise though.
Lex just wants Hannah to have every opportunity, and while he understands why the Kents and Clark are so careful about spoiling her, Lex thinks that on at least one day she should be able to have everything. Therefore, he’s seriously pissed when he and Clark get food poisoning from Thai food. Obviously they should have gone for the fast food like Hannah and her sixteen Happy Meals. Bought for the toys only, of course.
Instead of a weekend full of culture and fancy dinners, the threesome spend the weekend at the penthouse watching Disney movies, with Hannah feeding them both chicken noodle soup.
When Sunday comes, and Martha and Jonathan come to pick her up, Hannah announces in her Genie voice that it’s her best birthday ever.
Lex isn’t sure he wants to disagree.
*
Clark and Hannah celebrate her fifteenth birthday with a blazing row over a boy named Jack with an eyebrow piercing and blue hair. For once Jonathan and Martha don’t object to the boy as much as Clark does. It probably doesn’t help Jack’s cause that he told Clark and Lex that he thought Superman was a fraud. Something about really good 3D and a great PR agent.
At thirty-two, Lex would say that Clark should be past the older brother jealousy thing, but apparently not.
*
The boy’s name at twenty is Joe, and this time it’s Lex who wants to put out the hit. The kid is too cocky, too sure of himself. He drives too fast, has too much money, and Lex would swear that he’s a distant relation of the Hardwicks.
Joe reminds Lex too much of himself around that age, and there’s no way that Hannah needs that in her life. Of course, Lex isn’t supposed to know any of this, because Hannah is in New York City at Columbia, but that’s the beautiful thing about New York.
With so many millions of people doing so many things, it’s hard to realize you’re being followed.
Lex just wants Hannah to be safe, and whatever the case may be, all the evidence is more than sufficient cause for Lex to arrange for Joe to be caught with another girl. He’s seriously stunned when Hannah calls one morning in tears, because she’s just found Joe with another guy.
*
At twenty-five Hannah graduates from Yale with a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering and while it’s not Biochemical, it’s close enough for Lex.
Despite the conspicuous Secret Service, the President sits in the stands with his in-laws and the First Gentleman, thinking about the lost ozone and whether or not his niece put on sunscreen. At Lex's age it’s too late, but Hannah’s whole life is just beginning, and Lex plans to see her live it to the full extent.
After the graduation ceremony, Hannah introduces them all to Luke O’Brien while Lex lingers in the background, considering the young man carefully.
He should be able to have a full background check in three hours maximum.
As they prepare to slope off for the post-grad celebrations, Lex steps away to call Mercy. When Clark comes over and whispers in his ear to back off, naturally Lex opens his mouth to protest. It’s then that Clark gives him a run down of the necessary facts: Luke is six years older, and he works as a cartoonist. His father is Eel O’Brien, although Lex knows him better as Plastic Man, and yes, Clark did set them up. Clark also goes on to point out that unless Lex wants Hannah to know who put the color photo of her drooling on her older brother in her high school yearbook, he’ll play ball.
Lex contemplates pointing out that blackmailing the President could get Superman in a lot of trouble, but he thinks better of it. Instead he slips the phone back in his pocket just in time to be dragged into a photograph between Clark and Hannah.
There are a lot of flashes going off suddenly, but that’s why Lex has the Secret Service. And as Lex stands there with the young girl he’s watched grow up, he thinks that he could certainly do worse in terms of family. He only squints because of the sun in his eyes, polarized sunglasses or not, but he knows that even if he and Clark never have a child of their own that will be okay.
He’s not sure they could do better than Hannah anyway.

Date: 2003-03-13 03:48 pm (UTC)They are aren't they, but that's the thing about brothers/dads/uncles, they always tend to try and prevent their sisters/daughters/nieces from growing up. Things are always so much easier when kids are smaller. That's the theory anyway.
