Oh, I like this one.

A man travels the world in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.*

The city is Billy’s lover.
The city is a she or he or they, sent to woo and chat up and get into his pants.
The city will romance or abuse him. It will nuzzle his neck or leave bite marks on his shoulders, all depending on what he’s after.
A city is as good to him as he is to it.
Some cities are anyway.
*
London is the professional lover.
A city that belongs to no one and every one, and refuses to commit no matter what Billy does.
A rent boy, a flawless socialite, a big-name telly presenter, London beckons and winks lasciviously. She never seems to show her age, but will just as soon rip Billy apart for the masses as she’ll coddle him and keep him safe.
London has parks like Glasgow, and three pubs to every corner. But she doesn’t remember Billy's name in the morning, or any time afterwards, and that’s harsh in the light of day.
Billy likes London, but London doesn’t always like him.
London is not like Dom.
*
Rosarito, Mexico is the bloke that makes eye contact across the pub and then follows Billy to the toilets.
Billy’s becoming a bit old for one-night stands, but Rosarito has dark eyes and full lips, and it doesn’t matter if the city is small and dirty. It doesn’t matter if the city is poverty stricken with a girlfriend at home or just out to have a good time after a fight with his boyfriend.
Billy won’t be staying with (in) Mexico.
Once production wraps, he’s gone.
*
On the surface, Los Angeles is not for everyone.
One, it’s bloody huge. Two, it’s got crap transportation; and three, people who are not tall, gorgeous, blonde and thin, or richer than Richard Branson tend to end up pissing in the wind.
At least that’s what everyone says, but Billy knows better.
Yes, on top, Los Angeles isn’t for everyone, but if people look hard enough they’ll find that Los Angeles has character under all that slap.
The city tends to wear a lot of war paint, but she’s more than a pretty face.
Los Angeles is also comic book geeks in Silverlake and indie kids in Los Feliz. Los Angeles is surfer boys in Venice and valley boys in Burbank.
Billy understands what Dom sees in LA because he sees it too, and he can understand why Dom might have chosen to stay there with Elijah.
But he didn’t, and that’s all that counts.
*
Wellington is the boy that Billy never got over because he didn’t even know he was in love until much later.
Until after it was over.
The difference being that Billy can always come back to Wellington, with it's lush greenery and Elijah-blue ocean. 15 months of shooting, plus post-production for three films, and friends who will always want to accompany him should the urge overtake him will see to that.
Yes, Wellington is the boy that got away, but Billy’s lucky enough not to harbour any hard feelings.
He can still see this boy from time to time, and while Billy can’t stop himself from wondering what if, he’s also content to say that he was in love in the first place.
*
Home is a concept; a house is a physical object.
Billy has a house.
His home has nothing to do with his house.
*
London is glamorous, and Los Angeles is pretty.
Wellington is comforting, and Mexico is a one-night stand that Billy took for breakfast the morning after.
None of them are Glasgow.
Glasgow is more than Billy’s lover.
Glasgow is home.
Glasgow is friends and memories, and a place for Billy to make his own tea with his own kettle.
Glasgow is Dom and places where people know Wee Billy, not Peregrin Took.
Billy travels all over the world happily. He visits beautiful cities, and admires them all for their individual qualities. Then he comes back to Glasgow and the messes that Dom makes in the sitting room while he’s away, because that’s what he does.
That’s what they do.
He’s been lots of places and met lots of people. He’s had lovers and others, but in Glasgow, with Dom, that’s where he belongs. And he knows he’s lucky because not everyone has a place they can call home.

Am very much loving Billy right now.

His home has nothing to do with his house.
You are so good that it pains me. Three lines and they are perfect, simple and direct and beautiful.
And then, then this:
Glasgow is home.
Glasgow is friends and memories, and a place for Billy to make his own tea with his own kettle.
Glasgow is Dom and places where people know Wee Billy, not Peregrin Took.
*dies of maddening jealousy*
I loved it.
Oh, and thanks for the code.

Date: 2003-03-26 11:26 am (UTC)I've been feeling rather spartan recently, so it's probably showing quite a bit. I am glad you liked this, and again, enjoy your LJ.

Date: 2003-03-25 04:27 pm (UTC)Inventive and warm and the bit about LA just bordered on Francesca Lia Block which just made me squee quietly to myself and and ... BillehDom is always good, but this was just.
Marriage-proposal material.
And now I really want to visit Wellington and Glasgow.

A marriage proposal for my story? Wow, it's very touched. Very touched. *whaps fic, 'stop being suggestive!'*
I think the story likes you too. As for going to Glasgow, everyone should go to Scotland at least twice in their life time.

Have I mentioned today how much I adore you?

Date: 2003-03-25 05:18 pm (UTC)While I'm good at articulating criticisms, I'm horrible at voicing my praise and admiration. Suffice it to say, this is beautiful and original and sent me into interesting waves of thought. Thank you for sharing.

I've lived here for 4 years, and I never get tired of her - she's my muse. Though I do hope to be in London by the end of this year - maybe I can hide you in my suitcase? *giggles*
Now I'm off to icon-making! (Oh, and I checked out [Bad username or unknown identity: untitled06's] site: Good Lord - intimidate me why don't you? Really amazing work to live up too, but I do love a challenge)

The whole Wellington bit about being the boy who got away kills me. And the Elijah-blue ocean thing fucking makes me want to cry.
