I’ve been trying to write this for the last week and finally just gave up.

LOTRips
Lesson and one and only is: don’t you care too hard
-Witness

The problem with the night before is that, inevitably, it turns into the morning after.

Some people handle this well.

Some people don’t

Billy

Billy sleeps on the right side of the bed.

He generally wakes up twice: once when the alarm goes off, and then again when he actually gets out the bed. It takes between two and twenty minutes for this second instance to happen.

Once Billy realises that he has to get up there’s quite a bit of grunting and tossing and turning. Sometimes it’s easier, most times its harder. When this entire process is completed, he rolls out the bed, firmly placing both feet on the floor, and generally stepping on the clothes that he couldn’t be arsed to stick in the hamper the night before.

He staggers out of bed, scratching and yawning, and makes his way to the toilet. It’s fourteen steps between the bed and the door to the bathroom, and he’s able to do this without opening his eyes.

In the bathroom, he brushes his teeth and turns on the shower. Sleeping in the nude disperses with the need to shuck his boxers on the floor, and it’s only once hot water is coursing over his body that he deigns to wake up.

Billy is not a morning person.

This morning, however, there’s a body between him and the edge of the bed, and it throws off all of Billy’s normal activities.

So instead of getting out the bed, he rolls over and goes back to sleep.

Elijah

Elijah sleeps on the left side of the bed.

The majority of his mornings have been spent on some set or another and as such he’s accustomed to keeping ungodly hours and sleeping in small spaces. He doesn’t keep his own time, and his mornings are generally not his own.

When he goes home to Los Angeles it’s hard for him to sleep in his bed because it’s too big. Too foreign. There’s no routine to be kept, and it’s hard for him to get up at a set time. Sometimes he sleeps all day. Sometimes he doesn’t sleep at all, but when he has company he’s polite enough to follow whatever pattern they attempt to establish.

He always starts the day the same way though, whether it’s four am or four in the afternoon. His eyes pop open at the sound of his alarm, and his arm extends from underneath the blankets, scrabbling for his cloves.

He keeps them on the nightstand for easier access.

Instead of heading to the bathroom, Elijah heads for the closest open window, and he lights up instinctively. Most mornings he’s able to light the right end, but sometimes he tries to light the filter instead.

Most people require coffee to open their eyes, Elijah requires some form of nicotine. The first inhalation is all it takes for him to pry his eyes wide open, and he spends the duration of his smoke picking the sleep out the corner of his eyes.

This morning, however, Elijah is on the wrong side of the bed, and when he reaches out his hand he finds fluffy hair rather than cardboard packaging and plastic wrapping.

Orlando

Orlando sleeps wherever.

Sometimes he’s in the bed, sometimes he’s on the sofa or in the car. He’s been known to sleep on the floor if he can’t reach his target destination, because as has often been said, Orli isn’t terribly picky about much of anything.

This morning he wakes up in a bed that’s not his own, next to a body that he’s only vaguely aware of, and it’s instinct rather than anything else that gets him to roll out the bed and start scrounging around for his trousers.

He’s already got one leg in when he finally turns around and catches Elijah watching him.

Most people would be slightly discomfited to find themselves being observed while they get dressed, but Orli isn’t most people. Instead of being ashamed at being caught doing a runner, Orli grins, finishes pulling on his trousers and then walks over to the nightstand and tosses Elijah his smokes.

He’s a good person to have the morning after with. Nothing phases him.

He never tries to stick around.

Dominic

Dom also sleeps on the right side of the bed.

He’s part of a rare breed that wakes up the first time the alarm goes off. His eyes open so wide that sometimes he can’t remember actually having slept at all, and he keeps his yoga mat in the corner of his room. Dom tends to glide rather than stumble, and he does his yoga first thing in the morning, before anything else happens. Even before he bothers to put on clothes.

Once he’s completed his stretches, he heads to the kitchen to turn on the kettle. He makes sure to prepare his tea before he washes, so his tea has a chance to steep and become as strong as he likes it. Only then does he head for the toilet where he washes thoroughly.

Ever since he got his own place, he’s gone straight from the bath back to the kitchen for his tea, and in his last flat there were stains on the floor from where he'd tracked water from the bathroom.

With tea in hand, he heads back to his bedroom where he turns on the stereo, makes the bed and gets dressed.

This is Dom’s routine, and he never deviates.

This morning, when he wakes up, he rolls to the left instead of to the right, nearly crushing Billy.

Billy is not amused.

Billy

Billy is not a morning person.

He’s vaguely accustomed to sharing his bed with other people, but never with people who don’t know how to leave when he’s still asleep or at least pretending to be asleep.

Dom, apparently, doesn’t know the etiquette.

Instead of leaving the way Billy expects him too, Dom moves closer and goes back to sleep.

I'm being stalkerish and found this through a friend's friends list, but I just wanted to let you know how much I loved it. Something about the way you organized the sentence structure and kept it basically the same when describing each person's sleep pattern just made the whole fic flow perfectly. Plus, the whole idea behind it was just adorable.

The details are so nice. Billy's 14 steps, Elijah's fingers reaching for the cloves, Orlando's dive for his clothes and the door. Lovely.

Awww. It's so cute, and it's all for me. And there's closure! I love that. I'm all squishy now. ::sniffs:: ::hugs you::

When I saw that challenge last week, I thought to myself, "Oh, wonderful. A week of fucking torture for yours truly." There's nothing that drives me more nuts than stories that don't resolve properly. There were only two or three that I thought used the challenge properly instead of just stopping the story mid-stream, yours and a couple of others. I can't tell you how delighted I am that you wrote a resolution, and it's so pretty and you dedicated it to ME! ::hugs you again::

I love how Orli leaves while Elijah is smoking but Dom stays and goes back to sleep, and it's all just so damn cute. ::hugs you some more::

I had a bitch of a time trying to write this last week. I was working these horrific days and I'd read my comments at night half dead, and you know I was terribly tempted to e-mail you that it was, in fact, Professor Plum in the observatory with the pipe... What really made me laugh was that I didn't write this for contrelamontre, it just happened to fall in the same time period, but yes, all for you.

Eeee - sequel! sequel! And what a great one - loved all the morning rituals and how they fit together so wonderfully. And Dom sticks around, how squeeworthy is that? :)

Yes, Dom did stick around which directly contradicts all teachings about one-night stands, but of course, Dom likes to be contrary like that.

Nice work here. Morning rituals of each, defining how they handle relationships. Cool. Nice edge here and clean lines. I really like this rps and your take here is full of lovely details and depth. Thanks, Vee

Oh, that was wonderful. The details are amazing, they make the whole thing seem very real. And Dom sticks around, which is just so sweet.
I love the first sentence. The problem with the night before is that, inevitably, it turns into the morning after. A perfect way to start.

Great fic!

I restarted this piece three times, but it always had the same opening because I just couldn't let that sentiment slide away, so thanks, I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

This is so adorable and so pretty, I am very much one with swooning right now.

And as it is morning as I read this, I feel it is the perfect time to get the full affect of it.

Great details; I love you showing the details of each person and then at the last part connecting their morning to someone else's. *sighs*

*makes noise of satisfaction* What lovely feedback, I'm so glad that you enjoyed this. It was so hard to finish that I wasn't sure that it even made sense in the end.

Damn you woman, you have them all in your pocket, don't you? C'mon, give -- I know they're there. I bet Lij is smoking in there and everything.

Hee.

So the greatest part about all this? That everyone can relate. Yes. No matter what, waking up is a universal and you've got it here in such a way that just makes me look forward to getting up tomorrow morning. Which is just wrong, wrong and more wrong.

For the record, I'm the one that slaps the hell out of the snooze and has enough motor control to turn the alarm all the way off when needed, and then I blearily try and figure out why cricket scores are being read over my radio. Ahh, god bless the BBC.

Eejit. I warned him there would be hell to pay if my jeans caught on fire.

I was hoping that this was one of those relatable ones as opposed to the the kind where I say something and people are like 'you do that?' and i'm all 'errr, yeah, doesn't everybody?'

I like this Orli. It feels good that he leaves happily in the morning, free of guilt, with no nasty cryingElijah scene ♥

Of course, it's all good, this was just my favorite line.

Your icon never fails to crack my shit up, bless you for that. As for the ElijahActingLikeALittleGirl thing, I have never been into boys getting castrated and acting like girls. Really, so not my thing.

I simply adore (am so in love with) the little narrative and chain effect of the story you have. It flows so perfectly, and make it a delight to read, and re-read, and the descriptions are spot-on gorgeous. I especially love the one about Elijah needing nicotine to wake up in the morning. It just...it ignites every sense for me. Gor-geous.
