I know a lot of people are suffering to no end because of the inclement weather and for that I am sorry. I know people are probably stranded with cabin fever, maybe even without power (in which case, um, damn, son). But as bad as that is the people of Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation have been without power or water or heat for nearly two weeks. No, that's no typo.

I know people have been emptying their pockets for [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti, which just goes to show the power of fandom, but if anybody's got a few dollars left that that they might want to throw this way for Emergency Assistance (or here via Piryx) to help these people or could even just pass the message on to people that might be able to help that would just be amazing.

It will never cease to baffle me as to why people feel the need to read and comment on stories they clearly don't like. Is your 'back' button broken? Do you really think your rudeness is so invaluable? Why would you say 'I didn't really like this story, I don't think you're a really good writer, but whatever, I read it.' Or better yet, "Everybody said this was good, but I just don't agree." I just... what?

Can someone tell me where manners went to die, becuse I'd like to put flowers on their grave?

In less irritating news, since I missed this when it was going on, I'm doing it today:

Today has been declared lurker amnesty day (by me!) Have you read me but never commented? Do you surf by occasionally? Here for the ficinsanity? Say hello! You are under no obligation to ever comment or delurk again, but here's a chance to do so in a post just for that.

Oh, and since this is my all-inclusive post, anybody have the new Sade, Corrine Bailey Rae or Massive Attack albums to share? SCORE! Thanks [livejournal.com profile] sugargroupie and [livejournal.com profile] jcase!

*sends the Sioux Nation money* WTFFFFFF how have I not heard of that sooner?? Thank you :(

re: reviews -- I've never understood that either. I'd rather just employ my backpage button. I don't mind if someone leaves a comment that is partially positive/partially crit, but an openly "I hated this story" comment, uh, okay? Thanks for your time? You don't get a refund just because you didn't like it.

The article I read said that the Sioux Nation mess has been overshadowed by Haiti and by the Snowpocalypse on the East Coast, which it, sadly, probably has.

As for reviews, if I read something I don't like, I hit my back button. There's nothing wrong with positive/partial crit, but there's a lot wrong with just being a dick just because you feel like the world needs to hear your dickishness (new word FTW!)

Seriously! I read this amazing fic this week where one of the first comments was essentially "This was good, but I disagree with every single part of your characterization and at least one of your major plot points. Also, I saw the ending coming a mile away and the bad guy was totally obvious."

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. I really do think that fic is one of those areas where if you don't have anything nice (or at least constructive!) to say, don't say anything.

Also, I lurk. I used to just wander by occasionally, but I really like your fic and the music and the things you care about (see this post, for example) and [livejournal.com profile] vylit likes you, SO. :D

(Yes, that is sadly all I can say about that that doesn't degenerate into insults and bad language). And yes, I whole-heartedly agree with the "If you don't have something nice (or positive) to say, STFU!"

And hai, too! *waves*

What's even more odd is that this goes against the unwritten rules of fannish behavior, where silence is implied criticism. Y'know, where a lack of comments means people didn't like. Which in this case would be preferable.

Idek. Some people need to share their special snowflakeness with the class and do so by putting others down. You know how I feel about such people.

Also, that's some bullshit, dude. Poke would have Things to Say.

I admit that sometimes that is true, but [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine did a great break down of why people do/don't comment that I think probably covers that a lot more. I mean there are lots of stories that people love that I don't and lots of things that I love that I'm sure people are all, WTF? And yet, I do not go around pissing in people's pockets over it. *That* is where my problem comes from. If you don't like it for whatever reason, you are entitled, but to spread your hateration? NOT OKAY.

I found your journal a couple of times in hp but what made me friend you was when I read all of your Ari fic. &hearts

I love the way you make the characters in various fics so real and flawed and messy and I still love them so much. Their is also no real hating on one part of the pairing to glorify the other which makes me feel inspired but what writing can do.

Some people never had a thought they didn't feel the need to share. I don't understand it - and it mostly happens to me on episode recap posts rather than stories, where it's a million times more irritating - but I get a lot of those kinds of wtf? comments, where I'm just like, "Why did you feel the need to tell me that?"

Hello! I dropped by in September or so because of your GK fics and just kind of kept hanging around, like that dinner guest you wish would leave, but are too polite to do anything more than drop hints. What can I say? You make some very intriguing posts.

Re: the assholic behavior of some commenters: I don't think you can do a ton about it except accept it and vent later. It's like that dick you cuts you off on the freeway; he's endangering your life, his own, and the 30-odd people in your immediate vicinity, but there's no way of repaying him without you coming off as the bad guy. And, chances are, he's already sped off to cut somebody else off. Sooner or later, he's gonna get smacked like the hand of God, but that tends to come from circumstance, not from someone who got hurt in his little hit-and-run.

Um. That metaphor kind of kidnapped me and drove off, didn't it? I can't seem to jump from the car!

i currently have two different fics of yours on my ipod, just because i know that they will make any train ride/bus ride/car trip/boring class/waiting of any sort three thousand times better, and they never, ever fail. (i have get some (the gk high school au) and son is on a midnight run like deniro, in case you were wondering.) everything you write is imbued with this sense of reality, which is amazing, because it stays there through ari and transformers aus and anything else you could possibly write. the words you choose say so much in so little, and it's amazing how you make what the characters don't say just as essential and interesting as what they do say.

i haven't friended you (for unknown reasons -- i think you are just too cool), but i check your lj and get very excited whenever there is anything new. so, thank you!

(also, the fic where nate and brad break up? it breaks me. every. single. time. in the best way possible, but still. breaking.)

Thank you for passing on the word about the Sioux nation, I get paid tomorrow, so I will be sending some that way. I hadn't heard of this (even though I've been under the weight of the Snow-apocalypse. that's no excuse.) I have been out of work the last 4 days (no work = no pay), but I've been surrounded by heat, food, hot water, and the idea that that privilege doesn't extend to everyone... well, that's not on.

Also, I don't comment enough, but I came here for the awesome meta/commentary on fandom, stayed for the GK, and unbelievably excited by the prospect of more Southland! You last fusion with angels just about hit every kink I had. Thank you...

I love salsa.

But I'm kind of particular about my salsa. I'm constantly trying new kinds off the grocery shelf (I live in Texas, there's a lot of flavors) and I read the list of ingredients, and sometimes there's roasted red peppers in there, and I bypass the jar. And maybe once in a while I miss a type that I'd really like, because the peppers are understated, or someone's finally figured out how to use them in a way that doesn't make them so horribly sweet. And sometimes there's no roasted red peppers, and the salsa looks nice and thick and perfect for spooning on top of tacos, or nice and blended and perfect for chips, and I get a jar. But it's too mild, or too chunky, or too sweet, and I hate it.

I've always figured that you win some and you lose some, and the fault, if there is fault in taking a chance on a limited number of variables, was mine, as opposed to the farmer and the recipe designer and the manufacturer, who obviously had different taste than me. Nobody made this salsa with the intent to offend my tastebuds, they made it to please someone else's. So I take the jar to the office and leave it for the hungry interns downstairs, and I go and try another variety.

And that's how I feel about fanfic.

I admit when I first started reading this comment I was like, "Why are salsa people spamming my LJ?" and then I realized the analogy you were making. V nice. *nods* For the record I like my salsa chunky and searing like too much wasabi on my sushi. :)
