Dear wise flist:

I need to buy myself an external hardrive. Something in the neighborhood of 80GB. Who/what do you recommend and why? How much should I expect to depart with?

On a scale of zero to so weird, how strange is it that I love watching The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy specifically for the fights in the apartments? I mean the fights themselves are chorographed beautifully, but mostly I just like looking at the apartments (especially the one in Paris). I can pretty much stop watching after I see the apartments.

I wrote Chuck/Bryce yesterday, and it's happy, dammit. We Sure are Cute for Two Ugly People

My dad bought me this drive (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-WDG1C5000N-Firewire-External/dp/B000EXTXSI). It's just like plugging in a USB.

The Paris apartment is awesome. I tend to really enjoy the Bourne movies while watching them and then not to be able to remember anything about them afterwards, but I have a very clear memory of that apartment and of thinking that I've never really wanted to live in Paris, but that if I could have that apartment, I'd live there forever.

WORD! Also, George is off being awesome again.

George Clooney’s rep says that he’s “not at liberty” to say why the actor has yet to make a statement about his Oscar nomination. Some believe Clooney hasn’t spoken up because he’s involved in a top-secret effort to broker a deal between the producers and striking writers. George’s handlers say all will be revealed in time.

Oh my god! He really is a super secret spy agent man. I love him so much. I bet Michael Weston is helping him out.

That 'not at liberty' line has Michael written all over it.

I bet George has trouble with the concept being super secret about things and Michael has to explain as patiently has he can that being secretive about things means that George cannot call Brad to tell him about more awesome George is than he is, no matter how vague he thinks he's being about the reason why. And then Michael would threaten to duct tape his mouth if he didn't behave and George would wonder how that was supposed to be discourage him.

I think the first time Michael takes away George's phone to stop him calling Brad, George thinks it's a game. A kinky sex game. He presumes Michael's hiding it on his person instead of in, like, the freezer. So Michael's in the kitching looking at AMTMP agreements and George comes in and like shoves his hand down Michael's pants and Michael's like, I have no idea what you think you're doing, but your hands are cold so knock it off.

"I was looking for my cell phone."

"And you thought it was down my pants."

"You mean this isn't a sex game?"

"No, this a Ari-sanctioned, Brad freeze-out."

"With no sex?"

"You seem hung up on this sex thing, are you not getting laid enough, George?"

"Not by you."

"I'm the hired help."

"I know, it's really cliche isn't it?" *pause* "That's okay! Hollywood is all about cliches!"

Oh George. I love that Michael's primary issue is that George has cold hands.

"You do realize that I know about seventeen ways to kill you if you don't remove your hand from my pants right now."

"You know how hot that is, right?"

"You are deeply disturbed man, you know that, right?"

"You're just saying that because you want to get me in bed."

"Maybe."

"What would you do if I replace my hand with my mouth?"

"Is your mouth cold?"

"No."

"Then you'll just have to find out, won't you?"

I have a Western Digital 80GB external that I believe cost me about $60 (this was last summer though, so you might be able to find it cheaper now). It's pretty small (about the size of a passport and maybe an inch thick) and is USB-powered, which is awesome. I've had a few problems getting it to work with my iBook, but I'm not sure if it's the hard drive or my computer. It's worked fine on my PC since last July with no signs of stopping.

For one thing, I'd recommend bigger. Because once you know you have the space, it fills up fast.

I'm partial to SeaGate, as is, I think, my Mac-user mother (I don't know what you have). I think between the two of us we have three of those in the house. The cords are nice and long (well, reasonably) so even if you don't have space right next to your computer, it's okay. I have mine placed under my desk and the cord reaches fine and spares me space on my desk.

The smaller externals tend to be about a dollar per GB. The larger ones (at least in my limited research at Bestbuy.com) can be roughly a dollar per 2GB. But at Best Buy you can get 160GB for $100.

Though, most of them are kinda the same as the others. They're mostly plug-and-play and pretty easy. If you don't have USB 2.0 ports a bubble pops up telling you you've plugged in a high-speed device into a non-high-speed port, but that just means it'll transfer a bit slower.

I bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001DYUJ8 SimpleTech SimpleDrive 250 GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive on the recommendation of a friend last year and have not had any problems.

I watch Face/Off for the fight scenes, shootouts, and cool clothes.

The whole point in watching Face/Off is to see the scene where Nicholas Cage gets out of the car at the airport and his coat billows in the wind behind him. If I miss that part then the rest of the movie is ruined for me. RUINED!

YES! God, and the shootout scene with the DOVES. I am shallow. Like a puddle.

I love how clever they are in the apartment fight scenes. Like when slaps him with a book or magazine! Hee.

80 gigs is really inexpensive these days - you can get a good Western Digital one for about 60-70 from Tiger Direct, I think. My recommendation, though,is to get a larger one - WD also has a 250 gig one (in pink!) for about a hundred dollars (http://mirinix.com/772919-wd_passport_portable_hard_drive_wdxmse2500_metallic_pink-wdxmse2500tn.html).

I have a Seagate one. Actually I have three, with the last one being 200 GB for about £90. Ah, the life I lead. :D

I have this one (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-WDXMS800TN-Passport-2-5-Inch/dp/B000HZD2YE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1201123352&sr=1-1) and I'm very happy with it - portable, pretty, 80 GB, etc. Also, not very expensive.

I can pretty much stop watching after I see the apartments.

That's, like, zero weird. I watch anything from the 1970s and fixate on the decor and clothes -- and not necessarily in a 'OMG that's so hideous' way.

And I'm on tenterhooks about what George is up to. Maybe 'sekritly brokering negotations' is code for 'beating the shit out of Fabio.'

(Side note: How do I get a job as George's handler?)

I'm a big fan of my LaCie "Rugged" hard drive, but I'm a mac user so my opinion may not count.

My recommendation is that you set a budget, and then get as large a drive as you can afford for that amount. I have an Apricorn (http://www.apricorn.com/product_detail.php?type=family&id=10) EZ BUS 250GB external drive, and I really wish I'd had the money to the the 500GB when I bought it. Believe me, you'll use all the space you have.

I've been extremely happy with my Apricorn drive. I like how easy it was to set up, the fact that it came with some nifty backup software, and that it has an internal fan to keep the drive cool. Also, it's on PC World's list of Top 10 external drives (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,123728-page,1/article.html). I did a little research before I bought.

Good shopping resources are Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=414&name=External-Hard-Drives) and ZipZoomFly (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductList3.jsp), and cNet (http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-3186_7-0.html?filter=503164_11795436_&tag=brdcrmb), all of which you can shop by price or features, and read customer reviews.

Happy shopping! Let me know if you have any questions.

Have had nothing but joy from my LaCie. Rugged version (http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-Rugged-Drive-FireWire400-FireWire800/dp/B000J4J6X4/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1201399222&sr=8-3). Plugs back and forth between my Mac and pcs, stores all my music, have used it to transfer music libraries for others. Works as advertised, no problems.
